ACSO’s philosophy, “understand the story, support the change,” resonates with me deeply and was one of the reasons I was drawn to my initial position as a Forensic Case Worker. To me, it means taking the time to appreciate and understand each client’s unique journey while supporting and empowering them to make positive changes in their lives.
Since the beginning of my university studies, I realised I wanted my career to focus on helping those experiencing systemic disadvantage within the criminal justice system. I majored in Forensic Studies and aimed to build my knowledge surrounding addiction, recidivism, and health promotion to understand and support those seeking to make positive changes in their lives. I have always been a deeply empathetic person and feel a sense of responsibility to advocate for and encourage those reaching out for support.
I was lucky enough to secure a position as a Forensic Case Worker with the ReStart Program while studying a double degree in Criminology and Psychological Science and working as a pastry chef and baker in 2022. I then moved over to the COATS Team as a Forensic AOD Assessor before securing a position as a Forensic AOD Clinician with FACT, and I have loved every minute of it!
In the FACT team, I didn’t expect to be presented with so many opportunities regarding professional development, networking, and training. This has had an incredibly positive impact on how I view my career and aspirations, and even fuelled my drive towards further studies. I am currently completing a Master of Public Health focusing on epidemiology and biostatistics. I am constantly empowered and supported by my coworkers and management to expand my knowledge and partake in various learning and development opportunities.
The best part about working in the FACT Team is the collaboration and teamwork. We are constantly working as a team to build our collective knowledge surrounding alcohol and other drug supports and treatment options.
Working at the Gippsland Traralgon Hub has been an absolute delight. The wholesome culture and constant buzz in the Hub make it an exciting and welcoming work environment.
The FACT Team assesses and counsels clients on bail who require alcohol and other drug support in an effort to divert them away from contact with the criminal justice system. We work closely with the Court Integrated Services Program (CISP) and the Assessment and Referral Court (ARC). We also collaborate internally within the Forensic Treatment Services (FTS) team mainly for professional development and supervision.
Outside of work hours, you will find me camping, bike riding, paddle boarding, and spending time with my nephews. I find great enjoyment in staying active, playing sports with my friends and family, and taking my dogs on new adventures.
I am so grateful for the opportunities ACSO has provided to me so far. I feel an enormous amount of gratitude working in such an inclusive and supportive organisation that prides itself on improving the lives of others.
