Julia, Forensic Case Worker

"I really believe that everyone deserves a chance to shine, and sometimes they need support along the way to navigate these challenges."

Ever since I was in high school I knew I wanted to help people impacted by the justice system and going through challenging times. I really believe that everyone deserves a chance to shine, and sometimes they need support along the way to navigate these challenges. I love working with people from all walks of life, and with different experiences and stories.

I have been working at ACSO as a Forensic Case Worker in the ReStart program since March. I started working in the field over 15 years ago after studying Justice– working in Child Protection, Community Corrections, and Youth and Family work. I changed direction for a few years – raising my children, working at a winery and making clothes for my own independent label.

In 2020 I started a Bachelor of Criminology/Bachelor of Psychological Science, then worked in Youth Justice before coming over to ACSO. When I started my double degree, I became inspired to work with women transitioning into the community after prison.

I think ‘Understand the Story, Support the Change’ really speaks to the heart of what we do at ACSO. We empower people to make changes in their lives and provide them with a chance to grow and develop into the people they want to be. People exiting prison face enormous challenges and barriers in their daily lives, but with a bit of support and advocacy they can access the resources they need to break away from the justice system. It’s an incredible privilege to hear people’s stories and support them on their journeys.

Collaboration is a huge part of forensic case work, and really enhances the outcomes for participants. There is an array of fantastic services in the community, and it is so important to network with services and develop good working relationships. Care team meetings are a great way to bring everyone together and try to achieve the best outcomes for our participants.
