ACSO Stories: McCormack Housing Provides a Foundation for Reintegration Success

May 8, 2025
Stable housing is more than a roof over someone’s head; it can be the turning point that breaks the cycle of incarceration.

Tim*’s story is one of resilience, made possible through the right support at the right time. It highlights how access to safe, stable accommodation can empower people exiting prison to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to their communities.

Tim had three opportunities at being released on parole. On the first two of these occasions, he was returned to prison for breaching parole conditions, which he struggled to meet largely because he didn’t have access to stable accommodation and experienced periods of homelessness.

This is a common theme among people repeatedly returning to the justice system. It is an unfortunate reality that breaking the law and returning to prison can be the most certain pathway to what is perceived as safe and secure accommodation. In Australia’s current housing crisis, those with a criminal history can find it incredibly difficult to access housing through community pathways.

From Prison to Stable Housing

When leaving prison on the third occasion, Tim was able to access stable accommodation through McCormack Housing (McH). This time, he was successful in completing his 14 months of parole. McCormack Housing helped by giving him stability and respectful, non-judgmental support.

Tim says, “There needs to be more services like McCormack Housing to support people coming out of prison. I don’t think I would have breached my parole and gone back to prison, if I had the support of a service like McH. I am so glad they accepted me into the program. I can’t thank them enough. I’ve got my life back.”

For Tim, the stability he gained through McCormack Housing also supported him to find a job. With further support from ACSO’s ReConnect program, he was able to obtain a ticketed trade in road construction and now has full-time work.

“Having that secure and safe accommodation with McCormack housing is often an extreme motivator for individuals to get back on their feet,” explains Sylvia Cassar, Operations Manager at McCormack Housing. “We give tenants the tools, but it’s up to them how they use them.”

Recently, Tim moved in with his new partner and has been engaging in mentorship work, helping others exiting prison to get back on their feet.

Housing is a Foundation for Reintegration

Tim exemplifies the resilience and fortitude of so many tenants McCormack Housing works with. Coming from incredibly difficult circumstances, he managed to build a meaningful future for himself and is now in a position where he can help others do the same. Tim’s story also reminds us that safe housing and reintegration supports remain critical to building stronger communities.
